Maintaining pasture productivity relies heavily on resting a pasture. Overgrazing weakens and sometimes kills desirable plants, allowing weeds to take hold. Depending on the time of the year, desired plant species (cool or warm season grasses, legumes) three to four weeks' recovery ensures pastures will remain productive.
Rule of Thumb:
- Grass blades should be grazed no lower than 3 to 4 inches
- Let pastures rest for 3 weeks or more, or until plants have recovered to 8 to 10 inches
- Avoid pasturing during wet periods - the soil will compact, reducing aeration and moisture levels.
