Forage sorghum is an excellent and versatile feed option with equivalent feed values to corn, however may produce high quality silage and feed under less than favorable corn production scenarios. The sorghums may be broken down into three main categories including Forage Sorghum, Sorghum x Sudangrass Hybrid and Sudangrass. Each has its place in the market depending on how the producer wants to manage the crop and how they are going to feed the animals.
As a general rule of thumb:
- Forage Sorghum is the best choice for silage in a single cut system. It has slower regrowth than sorghum x sudangrass or sudangrass.
- Sorghum x Sudangrass Hybrid is ideally suited for grazing, hay, green chop or silage in a multiple cut system. They have faster regrowth than forage sorghum and has greater stalk strength than sudangrass.
- Sudangrass is best suited for grazing, hay or green chop in a multiple cut system. Sudangrass has the fastest recovery time of the three products and is ideal for late season plantings.
